I love coffeetable-books about fashion (of course), but also about photography, art and interior design. They are so inspiring and fun to look through. On rainy winter days I like to snuggle up in a blanket and dream away in the beautiful worlds those books create.
Today I would like to introduce you to the newest inhabitant of my bookshelf: "I am Dandy. The Return of the Elegant Gentleman" by Nathaniel Adams and Rose Calahan.
Since I started working in menswear about two years ago I've been enjoying to observe male fashion trends. Some magazines say that the preppy look, which is related to the dandy style in my opinion, is "dead" and that the mood is getting darker and more contemporary. But the book "I am Dandy" does not show men who follow trends but men who ARE dandies and live by that. Each man is unique and tells his own story about life, values, fashion, the past, the present, the future and much more.
Almost right at the beginning of the book there is an interesting quote (let me tell you, one of HUNDEREDS of insightful quotes in there):
"If there is a cardinal sin in our world it is not self-absorption, but mass absorption, the dissolution of the individual into the mass. The silent majority. The crowd attired in team jersey. The mob, the throng, the flock."I almost totally agree. There is just this one doubt about that opinion I always have: All those "fashionistas" who stand out and claim that their style is "unique" and "individual" also just look like the other fashionistas around the corner. So what is really individual?
But let's not get off topic here. One question the book tries to answer is, what a dandy makes a dandy. What is dandyism? The easy way of defining a dandy is "a very well-dressed man" but that can obviously not be it. According to Nathaniel Adams a archetype dandy combines certain ideas about class, contrarianism, cultural subversion, eccentricity, wit and leisure.
In my opnion this is a very interesting and somewhat philosophical topic. If you would like to find out more about dandyism and get inspired by beautiful pictures of gentlemen, their homes and wardrobes you should definately read "I am Dandy. The Return of the Elegant Gentleman.".
