Current Read: #GIRLBOSS

I learned about the book #GIRLBOSS through instagram actually. They seem to have a very good marketing strategy here. I became curious 1. due to the cover as anything that's pink needs to be checked out and 2. due to the topic.
Sophia Amoruso is the founder and CEO of the one hundred million dollar company Nasty Gal, an online fashion store for "cool" girls. That's nice, you think, but not really interesting. Yes. The thing is that Sophia was a total loser at school, never went to college, spent her teenage years hitchhiking, commiting petty theft and dumster diving, and later did the most crappy jobs you can imagine only to still be broke and directionless. So how did she make it from there? The story about her way up is what Sophia tells in her book #GIRLBOSS in a way a best friend would do. No shame at all. It was super fun to read while getting some real advice and prep talk about how to take over the world.

Here are some pieces of advice to remember and think about:

Getting hired

"And that's the first rule of hiring: Although playing hard to get might be cute in the dating world, it won't fly with potential employers. They don't have time to court you, so you had better romance the hell out of them."

"You can't convince someone else - whether it's a potential employer, a loan officer at the car dealership, or someone you've been crushing on - that you're amazing and terrific if you don't actually think you are."

Staying hired

"Don't have sex with everyone in the world you work in. It's a small world. Good luck."

"Your boss is not your friend and if you're the boss, your employees aren't your friends."

"Be a nice person at work. It doesn't matter how talented you are; if you are a total terror to work with, no one will want to keep you around. And the worst kind of mean is selective mean - people who are nice to their boss and superiors, but completely rude to their peers or subordinates."

Money

"Another big no-no is increasing your spending as soon as your income increases."

"Don't live like a CEO if you are still a sandwich artist."

"If you're tempted to buy something, just imagine that those new shoes were actually made out of crisp $20 bills. Do those $20 bills look good getting dirty on the sidewalk? No, they do not. That's because money looks better in the bank than on your feet."

Style

"#GIRLBOSS: Own your style like you own your used car. This means wearing what you like and what makes you feel good. And it means getting dressed for yourself - not your boyfriend, not your friends, not your parents. Here's one thing the fashion industry probably won't tell you: Confidence is more attractive than anything you could put on your body."

"You should get dressed for your life. I don't care if the only place you have to go is the post office: Get dressed, #GIRLBOSS, and let the freak flag fly."

"We want you to dress for yourself, and know that it's not shallow to put effort into how you look. I'm telling you that you don't have to choose between smart and sexy. You can have both. You are both."

Attitude

"While you are reading this, I have three pieces of advice that I want you to remember: Don't ever grow up. Don't become a bore. Don't ever let the Man get to you. Okay? Cool. Then let's do this.
#GIRLBOSS for life."

"Being mean won't make you cool, being rich won't make you cool, and having the right clothes, while it may help, won't make you cool. It's cool to be kind. It's cool to be weird. It's cool to be honest and be secure with yourself. Cool is the girl at a party who strikes up a conversation with you when she notices you don't seem to know many people there."

"You don't get taken seriously by asking someone to take you seriously. You've got to show up and own it. If it's a man's world, who cares? I'm still really glad to be a girl in it."

"Unless you're born the child of a billionaire, work is something we all have to do. So hell, make it something you enjoy, because bored is not a #GIRLBOSS's natural state. At all."

"When you approach everything as if it's a big, fun experiment, then it's not that big of a deal if things don't work out."

There's tons of more cool stories in the book. I really had a hard time narrowing the quotes down to a few per topic. While a lot is about attitude, it's not for lazy people though. So if you are ambitious and hard working naturally, please read #GIRLBOSS. Chances are you'll be the next #GIRLBOSS.
